Event Information

Christening a ship is a revered tradition in the United States Navy, and while COVID-19 precautions will be in place, a christening at Ingalls Shipbuilding is still an event with no comparison. Attendance is strictly limited, masks will be required and social distancing will be practiced.

The christening ceremony represents a major milestone in the ship’s life. The limited in person audience, and those joining through live stream, will be treated to a display of patriotism and excitement for the future contributions of the ship to the U.S. Navy.

On Saturday, August 21, 2021, Ingalls Shipbuilding will celebrate the christening of its 12th San Antonio (LPD 17) Class of amphibious transport dock Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28). Those unable to watch the event in person, are invited to watch the livestream beginning at 9:45 AM CDT on August 21, 2021. Visit and bookmark the livestream page.

The ship is named in honor of the city of Fort Lauderdale.  Read more about the city.

Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28) is the 12th LPD 17 class amphibious transport dock built by Ingalls Shipbuilding. Read more about our amphibs.

LPD 28 will be christened by ship’s sponsor, The Honorable Meredith Berger. Read more about the sponsor.

For the safety of our sponsor and guests, the bottle of sparkling wine is encased in sheetmetal by shipbuilders and then wrapped in decorative red, white and blue ribbons.
