Ship Sponsor

Serving as Ship Sponsor for Kimball (WMSL 756) is Mrs. Kay Bowen Webber Cochran. She was born in Fulton, Kentucky/Tennessee, which is a town on the state line. She attended the University of Tennessee and has worked in the United States Senate since 1981.

Mrs. Cochran has been married to her husband, Senator Thad Cochran, R-Miss., since May 2015. She has two daughters and three granddaughters. Her daughters, Shawn Kipfer and Gina Wilde, will serve as her Matrons of Honor for the christening festivities.

In her spare time, Mrs. Cochran enjoys antiquing, gardening and reading.

The Ship Sponsor’s role is important in the life of a ship. She bestows her spirit onto the ship as she smashes the bottle of sparkling wine against the bow saying, “In the name of the United States of America, I christen thee Kimball. May God bless this ship and all who sail in her.”

Earlier in Kimball‘s construction, Mrs. Cochran authenticated that the keel had been “truly and fairly laid” at the Keel Authentication Ceremony on March 4, 2016. | More about Kimball’s other construction milestones
