Ingalls Shipbuilding offers no-cost career training opportunities to members of the local community. Recent graduates of one of our training programs sat down and told us about their experience and how becoming a shipbuilder has helped them find purpose, transform their lives and build a new career at Ingalls Shipbuilding.

Ingalls Shipbuilding has partnered with local community colleges and high schools that are providing training in:  Shipfitting, Sheetmetal, Pipe Welding, Structural Welding and Pipefitting.
Pre-hire training programs are unpaid but at no cost to you. Click one of the trades below to find out more information and apply for a pre-hire training program.

Classes available to Mississippi residents:

Shipfitting | A 12-week program designed to teach the skills needed to become a shipfitter.

Pipefitting | A 12-week program designed to teach the skills needed to become a pipefitter.

Welding | The Welder Pre-Hire Training Program is a 12-16 week self-paced program designed to teach you the basic skills needed to become a welder.

Pipe Welding | The Pipe Welding Pre-hire Training Program is a 12-16 week program designed to teach you the basic skills to become a pipe welder. This program requires a Pre-Requisite Requirement of completion of a Structural Welding course.

Sheetmetal | A 12-16 week program designed to teach you the basic skills to become a Sheetmetal Mechanic.

Electrical | The Electrical Pre-hire Training Program is an 8-12 week program designed to teach you the basic skills to become an electrical journeyman candidate.

Joiner| An 8-week program designed to teach the skills needed to become a joiner.

Opportunities available for high school students and adults.
Harbors

  • Program established to help Veterans transitioning from active military service.
  • Expanded to the public through partnerships with industry, state and federal agencies, and community colleges to offer technical training.
Talent Development Labs

  • Ingalls renovated and modernized the labs at Moss Point and Alma Bryant high schools and the Pascagoula-Gautier school district. Significant infrastructure improvements also included retooling shops and providing state of the art welding and safety equipment.
  • Ingalls provides training guidance, engineering, construction expertise, and material through partnerships with Career Technical Educators (CTE) and school district leaders.
Ingalls Shipbuilder Academy

  • Exposes high school seniors to the maritime trades.
  • Established in 2016, 119 students have completed the program with 58 students currently enrolled.
  • 11 schools currently participate in Shipbuilder Academy
  • Graduates of the program attend a “signing day,” where they sign their Ingalls’ job offers in front of school administrators, Ingalls leadership, family and friends.
Ingalls Apprentice School

  • Housed at the Haley Reeves Barbour Maritime Training Academy.
  • Over 5,000 graduates since inception in 1952.
  • 2, 3 and 4-Year apprenticeships offered in 15 trades.
  • Program produces technically skilled craftsmen and the next generation of leaders and stewards of our communities.
